Reshaping Your Inner Image

© J. Francois Barnard – 7 October 2026

I want to ask you a simple, honest question - one I’ve been asking myself a lot lately: What is my Inner Image?

When you look in the mirror of your heart - when the house is quiet and nobody else is watching - how do you actually see yourself?

Do you see yourself through the lens of your past failures? Your current symptoms? Your bank account? Or do you see yourself through the lens of who God says you are?

113That picture on the inside - that's your Inner Image. And whether we realise it or not, our outer life will always bend to match whatever picture we’re holding on the inside.

The Problem: Mental Assent vs. Living Reality

So many of us are sincere, devoted believers. We pray, we come to church, we read our Bibles. But if we’re honest, sometimes we feel like we’re knocking on a door that’s already open, or begging God for things He’s already promised us.

We know the Bible is true in our heads. We agree with it mentally. But there’s a big difference between agreeing with a scripture intellectually and having that word drop into your spirit as a living, unshakeable reality.

Think about Joshua. Moses had just died. Joshua was standing on the edge of the Promised Land, facing giant fortified cities, giant armies, and the weight of two million anxious people on his shoulders.

If anyone had a reason to feel overwhelmed, it was Joshua! His natural senses were screaming, "This is impossible!"

So, what did God tell him to do? Did God tell him to work up a big emotional frenzy? Did He give him complex military tactics?

No.

In Joshua 1:8, God gave him one primary instruction: Meditate on the Word day and night.

The Hebrew Meaning of Haga

Now, when we hear the word "meditate" today, we often think of sitting quietly in a room, emptying our minds. But in the original Hebrew, the word used there is haga.

Haga literally means to mutter, to murmur, to speak to yourself, or to roll a thought over and over in your mouth.

Biblical meditation isn't passive - it’s active! It means taking a promise of God and literally muttering it under your breath throughout the day.

You’re rolling it over your tongue:

"By His stripes, I was healed… Past tense. Healed. Settled. Done."

You mutter it when you wake up. You roll it around in your mind at lunch. You speak it right into the dark as you go to sleep.

Why? Because Paul tells us in Romans 10:17 that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.

And guess what? Your spirit listens to your own voice faster than anyone else’s! When you speak God's Word out loud to yourself, you are both the one speaking and the one hearing. You are feeding your own spirit until that truth settles so deep inside you that no circumstance can knock it out.

The Blueprint

Imagine a master architect commissioned to build a house. Before a single brick is laid, or one drop of concrete is poured, the building is already 100% finished on the blueprint.

When the architect walks onto an empty, muddy lot on day one, he doesn't see an empty lot. He sees the finished building. Why? Because the blueprint is his reality.

Dear Reader, the finished work of Jesus on the cross is your blueprint!

  • Your healing is already on the blueprint.
  • Your provision is already on the blueprint.
  • Your peace is already on the blueprint.

When you continuously mutter and speak the Word over yourself, you are studying the blueprint until the inner picture becomes real to you. You build the inner man first, and then the outer circumstances have no choice but to align.

The Breastplate

Let me give you another picture from Exodus 28. We read in verse 29 about the how the high priest should wear a breastplate over his heart. On the breastplate are twelve precious stones. One for each tribe. On each stone, the name of the tribe is engraved.

113This is a picture of you and me, carried on the Heart of our High Priest, the Lord Jesus. It is a place of intimacy, so close to His Heart that you can hear his Heartbeat.

That is where you find your true identity: You are the Beloved of the Lord, deeply precious to Him!

You are not just a face in the crowd or a number on a list. He knows you by name. Every stone on the breastplate is different, unique. He does not see you like everyone else. He sees you for who you are. Your beauty. Your uniqueness.

Your name is not stuck on the plate with a Post-it note. It is engraved and etched into the gemstone. That means that you cannot lose your belovedness. Not by your performance. Not by your mistakes. Not by anything you recently did or said.

This is your reality: Today, you are on the Heart of the Lord Jesus, carried by Him before the Father.

Jesus brings you before the Father and shines His light on you – and you reflect His glory, beauty and light. You sparkle in His Presence! You are His beloved son, His beloved daughter. He treasures you!

How to Start

So, how do we start to reshape our Inner Image? Actually, it is simple, practical, and a daily task.

  1. Pick your specific promise. Don't pray vague prayers. Find the exact scripture for your need.
  2. Start rolling it over in your mouth. Don't just read it once. Mutter it continuously under your breath.
  3. Guard your Inner Image. When symptoms or fears whisper, speak the blueprint right back to them.

Let’s stop describing our problems to God and start declaring God's Word over our lives. Let’s reshape our Inner Image until it matches the covenant Jesus bought for us.
